Mineo’s Pizza is an Italian resturant serving a variety of pizzas, appetizers, sandwiches, and Italian cuisine entrees. They are located along Wildwood Rd. in the Hampton area of the North Hills of Pittsburgh.
About Mineo's Pizza
John Mineo, a Sicilian who arrived in America in 1955, founded Mineo's Pizza. In 1958, he discovered an unoccupied storefront on Murray Avenue after taking a Squirrel Hill street car. Since then, three generations have continued the family business. Mineo's pizza dough is still homemade from scratch, while its sauce is created using Italian tomatoes, and the signature cheeses are grated by hand every day, following John's tradition from 1958. In 2022, that tradition came to the North Hills when they opened a new store along Wildwood Rd. near North Park.
"We are excited to be coming to the North Hills in the former location of the Tuscan Inn. It's an amazing space with lots of history to join with our own," a post on the website stated when they had announced their intentions to expand into the North Hills area of Pittsburgh. "Shout out to all our hard-working contractors trying to get us open soon - and to all our anxiously waiting customers. It has been quite the challenge."
The new location at the former Tuscan Inn is approximately four miles away from the brothers' hometown of Shaler.
When they initially occupied the 9,000-square-foot area in 2022, it required some improvements. However, it now boasts a private event room, a menu comparable to other sites, a complete bar, and seating for 100 individuals. There is also ample parking available.
The building, which was originally a hunting lodge, hotel, and restaurant, has a rich history dating back to its construction in 1888 by wealthy individuals. Over time, ownership of the building has changed hands, and a minor fire occurred in 2017. For the Mineo family, the restaurant played an important role as a gathering place for special occasions.
Mineo's first opened in Squirrel Hill in 1958. Over the years, it has become incredibly popular, so much so that its website allows customers to have their pizza shipped overnight anywhere in the country. In 2017, Tasting Table named Mineo's as having the best pizza in Pennsylvania. It's an argument many others across the North Hills of Pittsburgh will be debating for sure.
"Pittsburgh is an underrated, great pizza town, and this old-school favorite is one of the best," Tasting Table raved. "The family recipe comes with a generous grating of cheese, crispy crust, and Italian tomato-based sauce, and gives Aiello's, the longstanding rival favorite in town, a run for its money."
