I recently had the pleasure of dining at Cafe Des Amis in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, and let me tell you, it was an absolute delight! Picture this: it was a sunny early weekend, my son had a friend over for a sleepover (or should I say, a Stay Up All Night extravaganza), and we decided to embark on a breakfast adventure. As an Old Man on a mission to explore all the incredible breakfast cafes in the North Hills, I thought it was the perfect day to venture from Ross Township to Sewickley and see what Cafe Des Amis had to offer.
From the moment we stepped in, the warm and inviting atmosphere embraced us. The service was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. And oh, the menu! Being a French bistro-style restaurant, Cafe Des Amis had an array of classic favorites for breakfast and brunch. French Toast, Waffles, Crepes, Quiche, Sandwiches, Salads, Desserts, and more! They even had Gluten-Free options, clearly labeled for convenience.
Now, let's talk about the food. I decided to go for their Western Omelet - four eggs, ham, green peppers, onions, cheddar cheese, and tomatoes. It was cooked to perfection, just the right size, and bursting with flavors. The accompanying sausage, although a bit typical, did the job.
As for my son and his friend, they opted for pancakes with chocolate chips as a topping. While I initially protested, urging them to choose something healthier, I couldn't resist the allure of indulgence. And boy, was I glad we gave in! The pancakes were heavenly - fluffy, generously topped, and expertly cooked. And when they sprinkled powdered sugar on top, it was clear that they meant business.
One thing to note is that there are no servers at Cafe Des Amis. You simply order at the counter and receive a number. It took us a few minutes to realize this, but it added a unique touch to the experience. Additionally, coffee is self-served in canisters, and you clean up your own bowls and dishes using the conveniently placed trash receptacle and dish bin on your way out.
Located on a charming back street off Broadstreet in Sewickley, parking may be a bit tight, but trust me, it's worth it. Cafe Des Amis opens every day of the week, with varying hours, and closes at 2 PM. If you're looking to host an event, they can accommodate groups of 25 in their private dining area and up to 50 hungry patrons in the main dining space. So, keep that in mind for work meetings, birthday parties, bridal showers, or retirement celebrations.
All in all, Cafe Des Amis is an outstanding restaurant in the Sewickley area of the North Hills of Pittsburgh that you absolutely cannot afford to miss out on! Trust me, your taste buds will thank you.
