The place was buzzing, and I was lucky to snag a seat at the bar. As I started snapping some pictures, I was approached by none other than Barry White, the owner of the place. Barry was super chill and instead of being skeptical about my picture-taking, he welcomed me with open arms and offered to give me the grand tour.
He took me to the pool table area, where he introduced me to a ton of locals. It turns out Ed Sheeran and Mac Miller used to shoot pool here, adding a touch of fame to the bar's already rich history. Barry even got me a beer and then led me through a side door to an old renovated movie theater that he had converted into a thumping nightclub.
The contrast was astounding. On one side, the sports bar was filled with laid-back vibes and friendly faces; on the other, a rave party was in full swing. The DJ was expertly leading a young crowd, and the energy was wild. An artist was drawing pictures of ravers, and the place was alive with excitement. I even met a raver named TeTay, who was dressed to the Rave 9s in a leopard print outfit with all sorts of interesting accessories. It was a true sight to behold.
After conversing with TeTay, I returned to the pool area where I met a group of local Pittsburgh Lacrosse coaches. It turns out Pittsburgh has a strong showing of passionate Lacrosse fans. Barry continued to introduce me to more folks, and it was then that I realized this place embodies what Pittsburgh is all about—a real gem in the city.
By the time I left, I knew I had found a new home away from home. The Squirrel Hill Sports Bar is not just a bar; it’s a community, a melting pot of different people and energies, all coming together to enjoy a night out. Somehow, I made it back to that tango party to see how my better half did, but I told everyone there that I would be back and back often. This place is a true Yinzer treasure, and I can't wait for my next visit.
