We finally got around to stopping down at Knuckleheads Bar -- Yes, twist our arm. Now granted, we have heard from many people across North Hills about the Karaoke scene here which is regarded as second to none by many. Alas, if you are the Harley Davidson type, Knucklheads is well known for hosting Bike Nights too. Check their website for the next events of these sorts if you plan to roll your hog down to one of these things or bring your best rockstar impersonation.
When we were down there, it was early on a Tuesday, and a good hour or so before the Karaoke scene would no doubt get started. Still, while the bar was lightly patronized in the after-happy hour yet before the Karaoke time slot, we got to see some card tricks by a fellow regular named Joey D. He screwed it up but it was entertaining nonetheless. Another fella was working on a card trick or two as well and he was marginally worse. It was at this time, Pamela McNally, an owner of the establishment, came over to our table and sat down to chat with us. Great conversation was had and these patrons were fun and friendly.
Pamela runs a nice bar and it is well-appointed with about everything that you want in a local neighborhood bar including a jukebox and some nice pool tables - to say nothing of amateur card tricksters!
While we didn't get a chance to eat, we did have a beer (or two or...). Our bartenders were nothing short of amazing - they were fast, courteous, and attentive to our needs. Their friendly demeanors made it a pleasure to visit. But don't just take our word for it. Here are what others have stated about Knuckleheads on sites like Yelp:
I'm grateful to have Knuckleheads bar as one of the few remaining establishments that permit smoking, posted a Kimberly M. on Yelp. She goes on to describe Knuckleheads as among the tidiest bars she has been in! We have to agree. This is a place that is in excellent working order. Plus, Kim described the owners as warm and supportive—always making sure their patrons remain pleased while unwinding. That we experienced first had. Another aspect Kim liked was that they even strive to boost local involvement by frequently hosting charity events for various causes.
Kim singled out the popcorn machine as one of their all-time favorite features: "You can't beat the free, delicious snack to pair with your ice-cold beer." We, at Across North Hills, raided the popcorn machine soon as we got there. Great buttery stuff.
Kim wasn't done there. "There's a pool table section that comes complete with TVs and seating so you can watch your friends play while snacking on delectable sandwiches or fries from their deli counter." The size of this place makes it ideal - never worry about not having enough room at the bar, this patron stated. If they had an entire kitchen up and running, I would give them a 10/10 rating - but we'll take what they have now, Kim stated.
Underscoring the fun aspect we experienced, Kim loved the party-like atmosphere for sports games to watch on one of the seemly unending walls of TVs and display LEDs. She also stated she loved the free buffet for when teams reach playoffs, but be sure to check with them on game day. This fan pointed out the Jolly Roger flag that they raise with the help of patrons to pose with when our Pirates win! Plus, there is always one or more of the three owners there mingling with the patrons and seeing to everyone's comfort!
Okay, Kim M. We get it. You loved this place. What about others?
Greg R. described on Yelp quite succinctly why he loves Knuckleheads so much: "A great place to watch sports" and he added that he liked the free live bands on Saturday nights plus cheap domestic draft beer and the most efficient bartenders in the North Hills. Well, who doesn't like cheap domestic beer? We certainly do.
Another fan, Matt D. - not our Matt D. - stated on Yelp, "If you're looking for an amazing local bar, search no further. The staff is incredibly friendly, and there is plenty of space to watch any game on the numerous TVs available. Plus, the clientele in this establishment is always cordial and I've never encountered a conflict before!" Additionally, Matt liked their selection of drinks, which he stated, "...will blow your mind; from craft beers to every type of hard liquor - they have it all covered!"
If If you’re into shooting some pool, Matt D. added, "Their tables are perfectly maintained with ample room to shoot. To top off this fantastic experience they also offer darts tournaments, Golden Tee machines, a jukebox, plus karaoke nights which make each visit unique. Oh yeah did I mention Wednesday night bike night? Amazing stories to be heard no matter who you talk to! And don't forget about free popcorn !! If you haven't been here yet what are waiting for?"
Great comments but no neighborhood bar is perfect, right?
Well, if we had one complaint, it is more of an observation. Three Degree Rd. on which Knuckleheads sits like the Pirate Ship it has out front, tends to draw a lot of speed demons, racing to make the light at Evergreen. So be safe and keep your head on a swivel when exiting. Other than that, there is much to like and little to not like.
We promised to come back and get Joe's card trick on video after he has a chance to blow the dust off his routine. We'll soak in some karaoke next time as well; you can be sure of that. So while we had a brief trip down there for the first go around, we will certainly be back.
Cheers! Knuckleheads bar is definitely worth checking out if you are in the North Hills of Pittsburgh and looking for a place to eat, drink or have some fun. We bet Knuckleheads Bar is sure to become your favorite local hangout in no time! So head on down and experience Knuckleheads Bar today! You won't be disappointed.
