There we were at Shooters Golf in McCandless, The Painter and I, all geared up in one of the high-tech virtual golf rooms. The plan was simple: swing some clubs, hit some virtual greens, and have a blast. Things took a comedic turn, however, when Gary Dulac, the well-known golf journalist and radio host, was broadcasting his show on the PGA Tour just outside our simulator.
As luck would have it, The Painter’s shots started veering wildly into the digital drink, and frustration mounted with each swing. By the time we reached the last hole, he’d given up on precision, opting instead to launch balls at the wall—which the simulator interpreted as a tragic tumble off a seaside cliff into the water below.
There might've been a few choice words shouted as our scores soared to an ungodly number over par. It was hard not to chuckle when I noticed Dulac discussing the grace and precision of professional golfers, while behind him, two frustrated amateurs—yours truly, Noodles, and The Painter—were unwittingly putting on a show of how not to play golf.
Despite our golfing mishaps, the service at Shooters Golf remained top-notch. The staff was incredibly patient and helpful, explaining the various modes and settings of the virtual games and making sure our beers were refreshed well before we even thought to ask for another round. Their attention to detail and customer care really made the experience stand out.
Looking back, aside from the virtual shenanigans, one of my favorite things about Shooters Golf is winding down the night by the fire pit. There’s something special about relaxing with a good brew, poking some balls out of the golf bays, and just soaking in the late-night atmosphere. I’m already looking forward to my next visit, maybe with a bit more practice under my belt, and definitely ready to enjoy more of that exceptional service and those cozy fire pit evenings.
