If you enjoy delicious custom-made pasta dishes and unique Italian cuisine, then Legend's Eatery is the ideal place for you! Located on the corner of E. Ohio Street and James Street in Pittsburgh's North Side neighborhood, this charming Italian restaurant offers a wide variety of gourmet entrees and decadent desserts that are sure to satisfy your taste buds.
I have been wanting to try this small restaurant for a while, but never got the chance - at least until recently. It was not the best of circumstances as I found myself at Allegheny General Hospital tending to a family member who had undergone surgery there that morning. Having spent most of the day in the hospital, I eventually got hungry.
I have been wanting to try this small restaurant for a while, but never got the chance - at least until recently. It was not the best of circumstances as I found myself at Allegheny General Hospital tending to a family member who had undergone surgery there that morning. Having spent most of the day in the hospital, I eventually got hungry.
A nurse suggested I go to Legend's Eatery, which is just across the street, for something beyond the hospital cafeteria offerings, which she sensed, did not excite me. I followed her advice and was glad I did as the food at Legend's was exactly what I needed.
Upon entering the restaurant, I had to go through a screen door and ascend a few steps to reach a small bar area. This section was in plain view of the bustling kitchen, and there was a man who appeared to be a local Italian sitting there reading a newspaper. As I walked around the bar, I discovered the small, multi-level dining area of the restaurant.
The dining area had tables and chairs with red and white checkered tablecloths. I chose a table that faced most of the restaurant but had my back to the kitchen. As soon as I sat down, a friendly waiter greeted me and presented the daily specials. Although some of the specials sounded delicious, I decided to order the classic Italian dish of spaghetti and meatballs.
The spaghetti was served in a generously-sized bowl, allowing me to comfortably use an authentic Italian spoon to twirl my noodles. The dish was topped with two delicious, meaty meatballs that made my mouth water.
I had the option to choose between salad or soup with my spaghetti and meatballs. Wedding soup, one of my favorites, was on the menu, so I chose that. It turned out to be a great decision.
I thoroughly enjoyed the wedding soup as it was made with fresh ingredients and expertly crafted with great attention to detail. However, I had a minor issue with the focaccia bread that was served as an appetizer. It was a bit small and seemed overcooked on the first try. On the second basket, it was heavenly.
While the Legend's location and venue may not be the highlight of this establishment due to its relatively modest size, it's precisely what creates a cozy and intimate atmosphere that larger restaurants often lack.
Summarizing the positives, there were several noteworthy aspects to Legend's Eatery. The spaghetti, paired with the homemade sauce, "Mama's Gravy" I believe it was called, was exceptional. The portion size was generous. Additionally, the staff was incredibly friendly and attentive.
Upon leaving the restaurant, I was clearly elated by the outstanding dining experience I had just had. As I made my way out, the gentleman at the bar, who may or may not be a local Italian guy, asked where I was from, to which I replied, "I am from the North Hills of Pittsburgh." He seemed pleased to hear that I had such a great experience. I mentioned to him that I wished I could have ordered at least three dishes. He smiled in agreement. With that, I left the restaurant with the thought of having one entree down and at least two more to go, eagerly anticipating my next visit.
Not only did I have a great meal, but everything went well with my family member too! What more could I ask for?
