About The Block Northway In The North Hills of Pittsburgh
The Block Northway, an Akron, Ohio-based real estate developer's project located in Ross Township just north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania offers a one-of-a-kind shopping and entertainment experience. With stores such as Dave & Buster's, Nordstrom Rack, Saks Off 5th The Container Store, Bassett Furniture, Marshalls, DSW Ulta Beauty and PetSmart - this mall is sure to have something for everyone! Located at the corner of McKnight Road and Babcock Boulevard near Ross Park Mall makes it is easily accessible to all who need a unique retail therapy fix.
It all began in 1953 when Northway Shopping Center first opened as a strip mall. After renovations in 1962, the newly dubbed Northway Mall made history as Pennsylvania's very first enclosed shopping center! To add to its unique charm and character, an aviary was even installed within the upper atrium of the space - though it sadly closed down by 1994.
In 1995, Dallas-based McNeil Real Estate breathed new life into the mall by renovating it. Five years later, Archon Group purchased the center and put it up for sale with 94% occupancy. However, as occupancy decreased in 2000, plans were announced to convert its enclosed upper level into a strip center. In 2005, the mall underwent a rebranding to The Shoppes at Northway, resulting in the demolition of its discount movie theater.
Just two years later in 2007, new tenants were brought aboard including a shoe store and family play center that replaced the food court. Unfortunately, Value City and Old Navy had closed by 2008; likewise, their replacement - Kid Company - did not last long either.
As Borders had to liquidate in 2011, its shop at Northway was shuttered. Additionally, due to the transfer of Dick's Sporting Goods store from Shoppes at Northway location to McCandless Crossing on April 8th, 2014 resulted in the closure of that venue as well.
By October 2014, little occupancy filled the uppermost level of the mall; only Marshall's and Shoe Carnival were tenants. On a similar note, PetSmart was the sole tenant on the lower floor in addition to Northway Shoe & Repair, an educational institute teaching music performance, and a hair salon. Many storefronts such as Party City, Ritz Camera, and Csonka Optical remained unoccupied at this point in time.
After forty years of providing the city with classic Italian cuisine, Mamma Lucia's permanently closed their doors on December 31, 2014.
But today, the Block Northway is a thriving shopping center with plenty of new shops and dining options. Whether you’re looking for the perfect gift, a new outfit or just browsing around, the Block Northway offers something for everyone.

Editor review
From being a mostly indoor mall with a discount movie theater to a primarily outdoor accessible shopping plaza featuring a weekly farmer's market in the summer months, this most recent iteration is a great one--and in keeping with today's consumer preference for more open-air shopping. What the Block Northway amounts to is essentially a high-end luxury discount shopping center to compliment Ross Park Malls' high-end brand offerings just down McNightmare Road.
Heck, they even added a BJs as an anchor tenant too. Remarkable, somehow, this shopping plaza, compliments what you have across McKnight Rd. over in McIntyre Square and Ross Park Mall down the street. It is somewhat of a combination of both of those shopping experiences and still something different.
You can't beat having the only Dave & Buster's in the north hills area of Pittsburgh. Moreover, you got a Wahlburger's restaurant too. This is to say nothing of some of the more fast-casual offerings such as Blaze Pizza and Piada Italian Street food. There is a little something for everyone at The Block Northway.
The Block Northway certainly looks modern and sleek and upscale too, which is great. However, there still are vestiges of the old wonky upper level and lower level experience they wanted to minimize with the redesign of the mall from its days as a primarily indoor shopping venue. The roundabout by Dave & Buster's is awkward but maybe that is me. We here in Pittsburgh are not as used to roundabouts perhaps as they some other parts of the country (at least that is my theory).
The location is convenient to many communities in the North Hills as it sits literally on the border of Ross Township and McCandless Township, both of which are centrally located in the heart of the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh. Yes, right up the street, McNightmare Rd for us locals, you have McCandless Crossing and that is a great little shopping plaza, replete with all stores you, and is home to the area only movie theater (I still like the good old movie theater experience), but The Block Northway just might be the keystone block in the wall of shopping options that constitute the retail mecca that is today McKnight Rd (McNightmare to use locals) that runs through North Hills up out of Allegheny County.
