PNC Park, located in the city of Pittsburgh, is home to the iconic Roberto Clemente statue. This monument serves as a tribute to one of the greatest outfielders in Major League Baseball history – Roberto Clemente.

The Story Behind the Statue

The idea for a statue dedicated to Roberto Clemente was first proposed in 2006 by Pittsburgh Pirates owner Kevin McClatchy. The project received approval from the Allegheny Regional Asset District and construction began in 2009.

The statue was unveiled on April 1st, 2010 – what would have been Roberto Clemente's 76th birthday. It is situated at PNC Park's center field entrance, facing the Roberto Clemente Bridge and the Allegheny River.

The Design and Symbolism

The 21-foot tall bronze statue depicts Roberto Clemente in his batting stance, with his right leg lifted as he prepares to hit a pitch. Designed by sculptor Susan Wagner, the monument captures the grace, strength, and determination that made Clemente a legend on and off the field.

The statue also features a number of symbolic elements, such as the four pillars behind Clemente representing his four batting titles, and a base made from granite from Puerto Rico – Clemente's home country.

The Legacy of Roberto Clemente

Roberto Clemente was not only known for his outstanding performance on the baseball field but also for his humanitarian work. He was deeply committed to giving back to his community and using his platform for good.

Tragically, Clemente's life was cut short in a plane crash on December 31st, 1972 while delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Despite his untimely death, Roberto Clemente's legacy lives on through his statue at PNC Park and the many charitable foundations and initiatives that continue to honor his memory.
