A Big Man on Smallman Street: A Pleasant Stroll On 420 (April 2024)
FeaturedLocation
Nestled along Smallman Street in the heart of Pittsburgh's Strip District, this area holds a rich tapestry of history that continues to evolve and enchant locals and visitors alike. Known for its vibrant market scene by day and pulsing energy by night, the Strip District has transformed from an industrial hub into a bustling center of commerce and culture.
On a cool, cloudless afternoon, I ventured down to this historic locale for a Bob Marley 420 Tribute show at City Winery, complete with reggae tunes and a full brunch. The event attracted a diverse crowd, including several folks from the Pittsburgh Tango Connection, known for their performances at the Terminal promenade or square, among many venues.
As my better half and I arrived, we found that parking was a challenge close to City Winery, prompting us to park near the Heinz History Center on Smallman Street and walk the few blocks to our destination.
This stroll turned into a delightful opportunity to witness the ongoing transformations that continue to shape the Strip District. The area is a canvas of construction and development, reimagining an already vibrant neighborhood.
Along the way, we indulged in some people-watching and explored local shops, including the charming Bitty and Beau’s Coffee and the intriguing Bass and Bennet, a store filled with antique furniture and collectibles.
Though we skipped the brunch at City Winery, the Bob Marley tribute show was a joyous celebration of music and community. Our day in the Strip District concluded with a late afternoon meal at Kaya, where the food was nothing short of fantastic—a teaser for a review to come. It was an enriching day spent in one of Pittsburgh's most historic and constantly evolving districts, reminding us of the enduring charm and dynamic spirit of the Strip District.
