Manda Flaherty: A Great Bartender In Yinzerville

  • Name: Manda Flaherty
  • Bar: Knuckleheads Bar
  • Years worked: 2 years in August

Share your story with us, Manda. How long have you been in the bartending profession, and what inspired you to choose this career path?

I've always been a people person. From the age of six until my senior year of high school at John A. Brashear, I was a competitive and sideline cheerleader. Growing up in the inner city, I developed personal strength and learned to navigate challenging situations.

After graduating college, I landed my first major job at DRS Architects in downtown Pittsburgh. My beautiful office overlooked PNC Park, but it didn't take long for me to realize that sitting in an office for 40 hours a week wasn't for me.

What was your first job as a server?

My first job in the industry was at Sammy’s Pizza in Carnegie, where I started as a server at 15. I thrived on meeting new people. At 20, I landed my first official bartending position at The Rusty Dory Pub on Route 65 in Avalon. Despite also having a career in retail store management, I could never leave bartending behind.

Over the years, I've tended bar at several establishments, including The Ugly Dog Saloon in Carnegie, Señor Frogs in Brookline, The Barking Shark in Millvale, The Brother’s Grimm in Robinson, and Etown in Etna.

How did you end up at Knuckleheads Bar?

I have visited Knucklehead’s only a handful of times over the years. In 2022, my best friend endured a catastrophic event. Her boyfriend, who is the father of her son, abused her so severely that she was airlifted to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition. She had a 5-month-old disabled son waiting for her at home. Our friend Jaime approached the owners of Knucklehead’s, Pam and Nookie, to ask if they could host a fundraiser to support Lacey after her release from the hospital.

Pam and Nookie graciously opened their doors and organized one of the biggest events in the history of Knuckleheads Bar. The kindness and generosity of these business owners deeply moved me and made me want to become part of the Knucklehead’s family.

At that time, I was working full time as a store manager at H&M (Ross Park Mall). Let's be honest—customers were not very friendly after COVID. From entitled mothers ripping clothes off mannequins to theft rings brazenly stuffing bags and running out the door, all I could think about was returning to bartending full time at Knuckleheads. I often wondered what it would be like to work for such selfless owners in my absolute favorite kind of dive bar.

I sat down with Pam, one of the two owners, who brought me on board. Since then, I have never looked back. Leaving behind a 25-year career as a retail store manager, I have no regrets about my decision. Just like Cheers “where everybody knows your name” — Knuckleheads is that bar!

Although I might not always remember your name, I will remember your drink or our last conversation to follow up on what’s happening next.

Bar Culture and Atmosphere

For those that are not familiar, tell us about Knuckleheads Bar. What is awesome about it.

Knuckleheads is the bar for everyone – truly your neighborhood hangout. It's one of those places where you're always sure to see a familiar face. Whether you're a regular or just passing through, you'll feel welcomed and at home at Knuckleheads.

How would you describe the atmosphere?

The atmosphere is laid back and unpretentious. We have an open floor plan with plenty of seating options, from bar stools to cozy booths. Our walls are adorned with sports memorabilia, including autographed jerseys and photos of local teams, giving the bar a true Pittsburgh vibe.

We offer daily drink specials and have a wide selection of beers on tap. Our kitchen serves up delicious pub-style food, perfect for snacking while watching the game or grabbing dinner with friends.

One unique aspect of Knuckleheads is our outdoor patio area. Perfect for summertime hangouts. Our summers are packed with events!

What is special about Knuckleheads Bar

We are one of the few bars in the North Hills where you can enjoy your drinks outside, indulge in indoor smoking, and get served until 2:00 AM nightly! Our kitchen also remains open until 1:30 AM every night!

Does Knuckleheads have community events?

Knuckleheads has hosted numerous fundraising events and participated in motorcycle rides that benefit various causes. Additionally, our beer wagon is a summer staple at Three Rivers Harley-Davidson on Saturdays!

Knuckleheads is deeply engaged in the community, hosting numerous events, including bike runs, that have significantly impacted people's lives. The owners have selflessly organized incredible gatherings, and DJs and bands have generously volunteered their time for worthy causes.

One particularly memorable event was for my best friend, a domestic violence survivor with a 5-month-old disabled child. During her time on life support and undergoing multiple life-saving surgeries, Pam and Nookie opened their bar to host one of the community's largest fundraisers. Their efforts ensured she and her baby were provided with formula, diapers, auction items, food, and more.

Signature Drinks and Recipes

What drink trends have you noticed recently among your patrons? Are there any new or emerging ingredients that you’re excited to use in your cocktails?

I absolutely love crafting fun drinks and shots for our guests! I've collaborated with our owner, Pam, to create festive holiday drinks with playful garnishes for occasions from Halloween to Christmas to St. Patrick’s Day.

My favorite drink to make is a creation born from a bar with limited flavor options: the Raspberry Limeade. It combines raspberry vodka, Razzmatazz schnapps, lime juice, fresh lime, sours, and Sprite for a sweet, tangy, and refreshing treat.

Do you have a signature drink or house specialty you’re particularly proud of? Can you share the recipe or the inspiration behind one of your favorite cocktails?

The classics are making a comeback! I can't count how often 21-25 year-olds request drinks like Alabama Slammers, Snake Bites, and more—thanks to TikTok! Green Tea shots are a definite crowd-pleaser; I could make them in my sleep by now!

What’s your personal favorite drink to make, and why?
When I'm off work, my go-to drink is Crown Vanilla with ginger ale (it tastes like cream soda) or a good old Miller Lite. My shot of choice is chilled tequila, which is when things get interesting.

What are your favorite specials or nights at Knuckleheads?

My favorite nights at Knuckleheads are Tuesday and Thursday evenings, especially during the summer—particularly when I'm behind the bar.

Every Tuesday night, we have karaoke! You can grab $2.50 tacos and $2.50 Bud Light drafts until midnight. The DJ starts at 9 PM, and local talent performs until 1 AM. Come enjoy some great music and performances!

During summer, Thursday nights are Bike Nights. Enjoy $6 Miller Lite pitchers until midnight, with local food and live music outdoors. Grab a hot slice of Large Plain pizza right outside.

Local Flavor

How do you incorporate local Pittsburgh flavors or traditions into your drink menu? Are there any local breweries or distilleries that you particularly enjoy featuring? What do customers like the most?

We proudly feature Altered Genius Brewing Company, located in Beaver County and currently expanding! At Altered Genius, they take pride in infusing local Pittsburgh flavors and traditions into their drink menu.

Utilizing local hops and grains whenever possible, they ensure their brews have a unique local character. Their community-driven events and collaborations are integral to their mission, fostering connections and celebrating local talent.

One of their standout initiatives is the "3 Day Weekend" series, which recently showcased three black brewers and one of our favorite female brewers, Daelyn—my best friend of 20 years. Her creation, a delectable White Chocolate Raspberry Golden Stout, has become a customer favorite.

We featured this brew on tap throughout February for our Valentine's special. Additionally, we carry their orange shandy, Hannibal Nectar, in cans.

Challenges and Rewards

What are some of the biggest challenges you face as a bartender, and how do you overcome them? What do you find most rewarding about your job?

As a bartender, one of my biggest challenges is balancing four night shifts while raising three kids. Despite feeling utterly exhausted, knowing my children are thriving makes it all worthwhile.

The most rewarding aspect of my job is undoubtedly the connections I form with customers. I love meeting new people.

Bartenders do more than just pour your favorite drinks—we share in your life's moments. We may not know your friends or family personally, but we celebrate your daughter's college acceptance and mourn with you when you lose a parent. We are there to share your joys and console you during your lows. We are always here, whenever you need a friend.

Advice and Tips

What tips would you give to someone who’s just starting out in bartending? How about some tips for home bartenders looking to up their cocktail game?

My best tip for a new bartender is to always smile and make connections.

Strive to be the calm amid chaos. There will be times when you're extremely busy, but maintaining eye contact and a smile can transform the entire atmosphere. Don’t hesitate to ask if you’re unsure how to make a drink. Even I sometimes forget recipes and rely on Siri for help—she’s the best. Remember, we’re all human. Sometimes people forget that you’re just one person trying to serve 50 thirsty customers at once.

Hobbies, Interests, Family

When you’re not behind the bar, what are some of your hobbies and interests do you have?

I assure you, there's much more to me than just a friendly face behind the bar. I am a proud mother of three incredible children! My daughter is involved in sideline cheer and two competitive cheer programs. My oldest son plays baseball during the summer and fall, while my youngest has just started playing soccer in both seasons. Needless to say, this mama stays busy!

Although I don't have much time for it anymore, my favorite hobby is painting. In high school, I sold a rendition of Van Gogh's "Starry Night," which was auctioned at the Inner City Craftsman's Guild in downtown Pittsburgh.

Art has always been a passion of mine, and I often find myself unwinding with a sketchbook in hand.

What are your favorite books and movies?

I absolutely love a good thriller or murder documentary. Mind-twisting movies and shows captivate me the most. That said, I also enjoy cozying up with a great love story.

Currently, I'm obsessed with the Bridgerton series on Netflix!

What are you favorite seasons, holidays?

Summer is my absolute favorite season. The warmth and sunshine bring me immense joy, and I love sunbathing. I also enjoy taking the kids to Idlewild, Sandcastle, Kennywood, or even a local pool or spray park. However, the ocean is my true happy place, and my ultimate goal is to live on the shoreline in the Carolinas someday. Winter, on the other hand, is a season I despise due to my struggle with seasonal depression.

Halloween is my favorite holiday! As an October baby, I naturally love Halloween and the fall season. I cherish the crisp air, haunted houses, pumpkin patches, and fall fashion.
