Unfortunately, plans fell through, but never one to waste a good evening, I decided to explore the vibrant local scene on my own. My first stop was Hidden Harbor, an eclectically pleasant tiki bar, where I struck up an engaging conversation with an economics TA that lasted over an hour.

As the night progressed, my stomach led me to a place affectionately known as "The Cage" by locals, but formally called the Squirrel Hill Cafe. Starving and ready for some classic pub grub, I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with a side of onion rings—dishes that were the stuff of culinary dreams. The food was absolutely delicious, satisfying in a way that only great bar food can be.

Despite dining alone, I wasn't lonely for long. To my left, I chatted with a freshly graduated college student embarking on a career in digital media. To my right, a twice-divorced man in his late 30s shared his life’s trials, including a lingering frustration that made him wish he could punch a-holes in the face. I offered some brotherly advice, suggesting he not give up on love, as the third time might just be the charm. After all, I mused, I’m still with my first wife after more than twenty years, so maybe there’s hope for everyone.

The Squirrel Hill Cafe proved to be the perfect backdrop for such diverse and spontaneous interactions, embodying everything a neighborhood bar should be. It was a night of unexpected friendships, hearty laughs, and culinary delights. Truly, The Cage isn’t just a bar; it’s a cornerstone of the community where anyone can feel like part of the neighborhood. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, you’re sure to find good food, great company, and maybe even a bit of unsolicited life advice, all served up with a smile at The Squirrel Hill Cafe.
